Back Wax vs. Laser Hair Removal:
Which Is Right for You?

A practical guide from Toronto Men’s Waxing & Laser — Downtown Toronto’s men’s grooming clinic at 2 Carlton Street

Both waxing and laser remove unwanted back hair — but they work completely differently, suit different people, and deliver very different long-term outcomes. Here’s how to choose the right treatment for your hair type, lifestyle and goals.

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at our Downtown Toronto clinic: “Should I wax or go laser?” The answer isn’t the same for everyone. Your hair thickness, skin tone, how often you want to come in, and your long-term goals all factor into the decision. This guide walks through both options so you can make an informed choice — or talk it through with us in person.

How Each Treatment Works

Men’s Back Waxing

Waxing removes hair from the root by applying warm wax to the skin and pulling the hair shaft out completely. Results are immediate — you leave the clinic with smooth skin the same day. Because the follicle remains intact, hair regrows over 2–8 weeks, coming back progressively finer with each session.

Laser Hair Removal — SharpLight DPC

Laser works by targeting the pigment (melanin) inside the hair follicle with concentrated light energy. This damages the follicle’s ability to produce hair — permanently. At our clinic we use the SharpLight DPC (Dynamic Pulse Control) Pro system, a Health Canada approved medical-grade platform made in Israel. The DPC technology allows our practitioners to adjust pulse width and energy levels precisely for your skin tone and hair thickness — making it safe and effective for a much wider range of skin types than older laser systems, including darker skin tones.

Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are needed to treat all active follicles. Most men require 4–6 treatments spaced 4–8 weeks apart for significant permanent reduction.

Why SharpLight DPC? Unlike standard IPL devices or older Nd:YAG lasers, the DPC system delivers Dynamic Pulse Control — meaning the energy is modulated throughout each pulse rather than delivered in a single spike. This reduces heat buildup in surrounding tissue, making treatments more comfortable and safer for sensitive skin areas like the lower back and shoulders.

Who Should Choose Which?

🪮 Waxing Is Better If You…

  • Want smooth results immediately with no commitment
  • Have grey, blonde or light hair (laser needs pigment to work)
  • Are trying hair removal for the first time
  • Prefer a lower upfront cost per session
  • Don’t mind regular maintenance appointments
  • Have an event or holiday coming up soon

⚡ Laser Is Better If You…

  • Want a permanent, long-term solution
  • Are tired of regular waxing appointments
  • Suffer from ingrown hairs or razor bumps
  • Have dark, coarse back hair (ideal for laser)
  • Want to eliminate the cost of ongoing treatments
  • Have sensitive skin that reacts to waxing

A Note on Ingrown Hairs

If ingrown hairs are a concern — especially on the lower back, shoulders or neckline — laser is the clear winner. Waxing removes hair from the root but leaves the follicle intact, meaning the next growth cycle can still produce an ingrown. Laser permanently disables the follicle, so once a hair is gone, there’s nothing left to become ingrown.

Men with coarse, curly or very dense back hair tend to be more prone to ingrowns after waxing. If that sounds like you, laser is worth considering seriously — even if you start with waxing in the short term.

Thinking About Long-Term Cost

Waxing a full back at our Downtown Toronto clinic starts at $50–60 per session. If you come in every 5 weeks, that’s roughly $520–624 per year — indefinitely, for as long as you want to stay smooth.

A full back laser package with SharpLight DPC (5 sessions) is $899. After completing your sessions, most men require only an occasional touch-up once a year or less. Over 3–4 years, laser typically costs less than continued waxing — and delivers a permanent outcome waxing never can.

Current offer: We regularly run package discounts on laser hair removal — up to 50% off multi-session packages. Call us at 416-944-3784 or ask when booking to find out what’s currently available.

Can You Do Both?

Yes — and many clients do. A common approach is to start with waxing for immediate smoothness while booking your first laser consultation. You can wax right up until your laser series begins (though you must stop waxing 4 weeks before each laser session, as the follicle needs the hair shaft present to absorb the laser energy).

Once your laser course is complete and hair is permanently reduced, some clients still come in occasionally for a light wax on any remaining fine hairs. The two treatments complement each other well as part of a longer-term grooming plan.
