What Is RMT Sports Massage?
Sports Massage is a clinical form of Registered Massage Therapy that targets the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia used in athletic activity. Unlike a general relaxation massage, our RMTs use a biomechanical approach — combining deep tissue work, trigger point therapy and PNF stretching to address the specific physical stressors of your sport or training regime.
Sports massage is more active and targeted than standard deep tissue work. It often involves assisted stretching, joint mobilization and sport-specific muscle focus — for example, glutes and quads for runners, shoulders and lats for swimmers, or forearms and rotator cuff for racket sports.
Because it is performed by a CMTO Registered Massage Therapist, every session comes with an official RMT receipt — fully claimable under your extended health benefits. This service is part of our registered massage therapy services in Toronto.
Available at our downtown Toronto clinic at 2 Carlton Street, Suite 720 — steps from College Subway Station. Charles specializes in sports injury massage Toronto for athletes at every level.

03
Chronic Spasm Relief
Eliminates deep-seated muscle knots and trigger points that cause spasms, compensatory movement patterns and referred pain during athletic activity.
04
DOMS Reduction
Post-event flushing of lactic acid and inflammatory metabolites dramatically reduces Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness so you can train again sooner.
05
Injury Prevention
Regular maintenance sessions identify and address tight spots, overloaded tendons and muscle imbalances before they escalate into acute injuries that sideline your season.

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon after a race or game should I get a massage?+
The sweet spot for post-event recovery massage is 24 to 48 hours after intense activity. This allows acute inflammation to settle while still effectively flushing metabolic waste, lactic acid and inflammatory metabolites. Booking too soon (within 6 hours) when significant inflammation is still present is not recommended — waiting 24 hours produces significantly better outcomes.
How is sports massage different from deep tissue massage?+
While sports massage uses deep pressure, it is more active and targeted than standard deep tissue work. It incorporates PNF stretching, joint mobilization and sport-specific muscle focus — for example, glutes and quads for runners, shoulders for swimmers, or forearms for racket sports. Deep tissue targets chronic pain generally. Sports massage optimizes athletic function specifically.
Is sports massage covered by insurance in Ontario?+
Yes — 100%. Every sports massage session at 4Seasons Massage and Acupuncture is performed by a CMTO Registered Massage Therapist. You receive an official RMT receipt after every session, fully claimable under your extended health massage therapy benefits with all major Canadian insurance providers.
How often should I get sports massage for training maintenance?+
For active athletes in regular training, every 2 to 4 weeks is ideal for maintenance and injury prevention. During heavy training blocks or race preparation, weekly sessions produce the best results. For injury rehabilitation, your RMT will prescribe a specific treatment frequency based on the severity and nature of your injury at our downtown Toronto clinic.
What should I do before and after my sports massage?+
Before: stay well hydrated, avoid heavy training in the 4 hours before your session and inform your RMT about any current injuries or areas of concern. After: drink plenty of water to flush metabolic waste, avoid intense training for 24 hours and apply heat if you feel any muscle soreness. Light activity like walking is fine immediately after.
Can sports massage help prevent injuries?+
Absolutely — this is one of the most valuable applications of sports massage in Toronto. Regular maintenance sessions allow your RMT to identify areas of excessive tension, muscle imbalance and early-stage overuse patterns before they progress into acute injuries. Most season-ending injuries are preventable with consistent proactive bodywork.
