What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep Tissue Massage uses slow, deliberate strokes and focused pressure to work with deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Compared with lighter relaxation massage, the pressure and techniques can be adapted to areas of muscle tension, stiffness and restricted movement.
Your RMT may use techniques such as sustained pressure, slow strokes and cross-fibre work based on assessment and your comfort. Treatment is individualized rather than based on a fixed pressure level or guaranteed outcome.
Because it is performed by a CMTO Registered Massage Therapist, an official RMT receipt is provided for eligible massage therapy services. Coverage and reimbursement depend on your individual insurance plan. This service is part of our registered massage therapy services in Toronto.
Available at our downtown Toronto clinic at 2 Carlton Street, Suite 720 — steps from College Subway Station at Yonge & Carlton.

The Clinical Approach
How We Approach Treatment
1
Focused Soft-Tissue Work
Friction, cross-fibre and other soft-tissue techniques may be used when appropriate to address areas of muscle and connective-tissue tension.
2
Trigger Point Therapy
Targeted sustained pressure may be used on sensitive areas of muscle tension, with pressure adjusted throughout the session to your comfort and response.
3
Circulation & Relaxation
Massage can encourage local circulation and relaxation of tense muscles. Treatment pressure is adjusted according to assessment, comfort and treatment goals.
4
Jaw, Neck & Head Tension
Focused massage of the jaw, neck and suboccipital muscles may be included when muscular tension in these areas is part of the client’s presentation.

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deep tissue massage hurt?+
Deep tissue massage can feel firm, but it should remain within your comfort level. Pressure is adjusted throughout the session based on your feedback. Tell your RMT immediately if you experience sharp, unusual or excessive discomfort.
How will I feel after a deep tissue massage?+
Responses vary. Some clients feel relaxed or notice easier movement after treatment, while temporary tenderness can occur after firmer work. Your RMT can discuss appropriate aftercare based on the treatment provided.
What is the difference between deep tissue and Swedish massage?+
Swedish massage generally uses lighter, flowing techniques and is often chosen for relaxation. Deep tissue massage typically uses slower, more focused pressure on selected muscle groups. The best approach depends on your goals, comfort and assessment.
Is deep tissue massage covered by insurance in Ontario?+
Deep tissue massage performed as an eligible RMT service includes an official RMT receipt. Coverage and reimbursement vary by insurer and individual plan, so confirm your massage therapy benefits with your provider.
How often should I get deep tissue massage for chronic pain?+
Treatment frequency is individualized. Some clients book one session, while others choose follow-up appointments based on their goals, assessment and response. Your RMT can discuss an appropriate schedule without requiring a fixed treatment series.
Can I combine deep tissue massage with acupuncture?+
Yes. Deep tissue massage and acupuncture can be booked together when appropriate. Charles Guo is registered as both an RMT and R.Ac and can coordinate both services in one visit. Separate documentation is provided for eligible services; insurance reimbursement depends on your plan.
